Qibla Finder Google Maps: Find the Qibla Direction on a Map

A qibla finder Google Maps view draws a line from where you stand to the Kaaba in Makkah, over a street map. You match that line with a road, wall or window you can see, so the phone’s compass is never involved. That makes a map the most reliable way to find the Qibla indoors.

This page explains why the Qibla line looks curved, the ruler mistake that puts Dubai about 3° off, and how to read the map correctly. For a map with a compass beside it, open our free qibla finder and switch to Map. It works on phones and laptops alike, with no app to install.

What Is a Qibla Direction Map?

A Qibla direction map shows the shortest route from your location to the Kaaba as a line across the map. Your position is one end, the Masjid al Haram is the other, and the line between them is your prayer direction. Once you know which nearby street or wall runs along it, you have the Qibla.

The line must follow the great circle, the shortest path over the curved Earth. A good qibla finder Google Maps tool calculates that path for you from your GPS position. Because no magnetometer is used, steel, wiring and magnetic cases cannot bend the result.

Why the Qibla Line Looks Curved

Google Maps uses a flat projection called Web Mercator, which stretches the globe. On that flat map, the shortest route between distant points appears as a curve rather than a straight line. Google’s own Qibla Finder help page notes that its line can look bent for exactly this reason.

Near your position the line is almost straight, and that short section is the part you actually use. Zoom into your street and match where the line leaves your location with something you can see. The long curve over the Gulf only shows the route, not the direction you face.

The Flat Map Ruler Mistake

Some guides suggest zooming out until you and the Kaaba fit on one screen, then pointing your phone at Makkah. On a flat map, that straight line is a constant bearing route, not the shortest one. Our calculation shows it gives about 255.1° from Dubai instead of the true 258.2°, a gap of roughly 3°.

The error grows with distance from Makkah. From London a flat map line gives about 134° instead of 119°, and from New York about 101° instead of 58°. That second gap has fuelled long running debate among North American Muslims, and it is why every reliable qibla finder Google Maps tool uses the great circle.

How to Use Qibla Finder Google Maps Indoors

Open the map, allow location and check that your dot sits on your actual building. Switch to satellite view and look for a wall, road or row of windows running along the Qibla line. Face along that edge towards Makkah and mark the spot so you only do this once.

Hotel rooms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are full of TVs, safes and steel frames that confuse a compass, so a map works far better there. Check the ceiling or a drawer for a Qibla sticker first, then confirm it against the map line. Exact angles for every emirate are on our UAE Qibla direction page and in our Qibla compass city index list.

Map, Compass or Camera?

Use a qibla finder Google Maps view indoors and whenever your compass behaves oddly. A Qibla compass is quicker outdoors, while a Qibla finder with camera looks impressive but relies on the same compass sensor. On a laptop with no compass, a map is the only live option, as our Qibla finder app guide explains.

The safest habit is to check two methods and see whether they agree. If they differ, trust the map and move away from metal before trying the compass again. Google’s own Google Qibla Finder also falls back to a map on desktop.

Questions

Qibla Finder Google Maps FAQs

Can I find the Qibla using Google Maps?

Google Maps has no Qibla button, but it shows the Kaaba’s location. Pointing your phone at Makkah on a flat map can be several degrees off. A qibla finder Google Maps tool that draws the great circle is more accurate.

Why is the Qibla line curved on the map?

Flat maps stretch the globe, so the shortest route appears curved. The Qibla follows that shortest route. Near you the line is almost straight.

Which way is the Qibla from Dubai on a map?

It is 258.2° from true north, a little south of west. A flat map ruler line gives about 255°. Use a great circle tool for the correct direction.

Is a map more accurate than a compass?

Indoors, usually yes, because a map ignores magnetic interference. Accuracy then depends on your GPS position. Matching the line to a visible wall removes most error.

Does a Qibla map work offline?

GPS works offline, but street tiles usually need internet. Our qibla finder keeps a world map offline and saves street areas you have viewed. You can still see the Qibla line without data.

Ready to pray?

Open the Qibla finder, hold your phone flat and turn until the screen turns green.
